Harvest

There was heavy rain and strong winds during the 2014 vegetative cycle with heavy rainfall both in winter and spring.  It was not until mid-April that the rainfall brought flowering and the first budding. As the harvest approached weather conditions improved although there were also cold rainy days. In 2014 we decided to bring forward the harvest to September 17th and we finished harvesting in the 3rd week of September in order to avoid the bad weather which arrived no sooner than the harvest had ended. It was a fast harvest; the grapes had less alcohol content than in previous years. Only the wineries harvesting the grapes early had the grapes in optimal conditions. Despite this, some clusters showed signs of botrytis (noble rot) and 25% of all grapes had to be rejected in an exhaustive grape selection process at the sorting tables in the winery.

Production

All grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a dual manual cluster selection process. Subsequently, they are macerated for approximately 20 hours in order to bring out the characteristic tropical touch. The wine was fermented and aged in its own lees in new carefully-selected French oak barrels for a six-month period which facilitated the capture of subtle aromas. Following the bottling process, the wine remains in the winery for an optimal coupage and repose before going to market.

Tasting notes

Bright with an intense yellow colour. This is an extremely elegant aromatic wine with reminiscences of white fruits (plum, pear) perfectly and subtly balanced with balsamic notes.  Fine and elegant, displaying good body and structure, with spicy tones and elegant and unctuous in the mouth. Smoky notes, passion fruit and an extraordinary saline touch so characteristic of Mar de Frades.

Food pairing

Serve between 10º and 12º C. Perfect for pairing with white meats, fish, or even Asian food (sushi, sashami, etc).

Temperature indicator label

The label incorporates a heat-sensitive logo whereby when the wine reaches its ideal serving temperature the image of a small boat appears which will disappear if the wine is not cold enough to drink.
